“negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation”
Throughout various assignments and genres I was able to set goals as to how an engineer should be writing in different genres and rhetorical situations. I also understood my audience expectations when writing. An assignment I feel as though really propelled me to achieve this outcome was the Memo assignment. In this assignment I had to understand not only the expectations but my end goal as an engineer. Writing to CCNY about their laptop services, My team’s goals were stated from the beginning in the “purpose” section of the Memo, “ I am writing this Memo to humbly ask a request about improving technology services at CCNY and inform you of concerns regarding the availability of laptops that students on campus can borrow. I can also advise some solutions but ultimately I hope the need of the students who attend can be met with adequate relied. I then went to give proposed solutions that could potentially fix a few needs. Honesty and required criticism will be critical as my goal is to give a proper request. This outcome is important to an engineer because you need to understand your goal in writing as well as how you address your audience.
This following section are examples of solutions proposed in my Memo
Solutions
- The borrowing system should also monitor our use of time and reasoning for borrowing and instead of solely relying on first come first serve, the urgency of assignments
- quizzes or online classes should also factor into how laptops are distributed.
-
Higher quality laptops and expanding inventory
-
Monitor/ factor in the reason for borrowing a laptop
-
Laptops with special specifications reserved for more important uses
-
Collaborate with students to better understand their needs. This could be done in the form of surveys and evaluations
